The Yamato was arguably an antiquated idea. Especially by 45

Hell, I've never been to Japan! But that's the first place I'd go.

As antiquated as the idea of live axle in the mustang in 2015; but undeniably badass and the ultimate definition of a wartime relic in its time. If the idea of air power hadn’t taken the roles it had in the decades prior and became the superior method of attack in the early years prior to WW2, it might’ve made more sense.
The Japanese were smart to convert Shinano to a carrier, but it was far too late for any of them to have any effect in the war. And when you remember the Japanese went to war for oil as well, and the large consumption these ships had, it really makes no damn sense.

The German Navy just got the shit end of the stick. And they had a shitty leader in Hitler(thank god) that just couldn't run the navy right. Example: Tirpitz was the most useless weapon in the Nazi war machine.

It was a giant game of chicken. Churchill was scared of the tirpitz getting into the shipping lanes and the Germans were too scared that thier ship would get smashed up to let it out of the fjords. But damn was the Bismarck cool

It’s hilarious how true that is. The German navy had the chance to wreck the entire lend-lease program and the Royal Navy in ‘39-41. They lost it because the Germans were too scared to make a move, and the Brits were on a rampage after they lost Hood. Although the Royal Navy got fucked a bit in the early years as well, discounting Hood, Renown and Prince of Wales, and PQ-17, anyone?

Halsey was an idiot, but Kurita was a pussy. He had a chance to stunt the American landing in Leyte gulf, but got spooked by a bunch of tin-can destroyers in Taffy 3.
That was the last chance a Battleships ever had to make a difference in a battle, and Kurita mismanaged it terribly.

The doomed arctic convoy... It’s almost funny how bad of a warship the hood actually was. Paper for armor and not enough speed or firepower to challenge the Bismark or Prinz Eugen

An antiquated idea for its purpose, perhaps. As it turns out, battleships are great for naval-based support of shore operations, as demonstrated by the Iowa off Eniwetok and Korea.

I haven’t, but I presume it’s on the epic story of Taffy-3 and Kurita’s epic fail at Leyte.

Yep, starts with the Battle off Samar by the destroyer escorts and ends (I think) with the sinking of the Yamato. Very good read. I’ve got a number of WWII naval suggestions if you’re ever looking for something to read.

Battlecruisers were just bad ideas in general from a combat standpoint. Can outfight anything it can’t outrun(destroyers/cruisers), and can outrun anything it can’t outfight(battleships). You either fight or you run.
It was on par firepower-wise with Bismarck, but since Bismarck was as fast and had more armor than Hood, it was no real contest. Prince of Wales, being a brand new ship, had so many kinks in it that it was just there to look imposing haha, not really though.

Kurita may’ve been a “pussy” at Leyte, but his ships were taking damage at such a rate, I would've retreated for a quick break, and gone back in there to finish the fight. Halsey got stupid lucky that Taffy-3 did what it did or who knows how bad it would've been.
Don’t forget Surigao Straight. That was a battle line masterpiece.

I'll have to give it a read sometime. I didn't think there was much to read on her, given her short lifespan and lack of any service.

I don’t actually. My reading has mostly focused on the Pacific. I need to read more on the Atlantic.

Well, that book probably has the most condensed scholarship on Shinano, and is packaged around (but is not only) an account of the sinking by Enright, the Archer-fish’s captain. Enright only pulled off the sinking because (a) he was paranoid about his torpedoes running too deep and set them to run shallow (over some armoring), and (b) he was balls-to-the-wall enough to party crash the destroyer escorts all alone, which led the Shinano’s captain to get really creeped out and assume he was acting as bait for a larger group.
A couple of really weird visual features on Shinano like the canted stack meant they knew it was something unique, and took the “it’s big and it has an escort, let’s gank it) approach. Because US intel at the time wasn’t fully aware of what Shinano was, they credited him with something else at first.

Surigao was a masterpiece, the Japanese stood no chance.
Kurita could have come away unscathed from the Battle off Samar had he organized his fleet properly. His destroyer screen was way behind the battle line, and his order of “General Attack” meant that the Taffy 3 destroyers could get stuck-in and cause massive confusion and casualties.
Compare that to earlier Japanese victories, like Savo Island, and it’s pretty sad. Kurita was acting less like an Admiral and more like a scared old man.

Battlecruisers were good ideas, but were heavily dependent on quality fire-control systems. The Hood could have absolutely won that engagement, but the Bismarck found the range first, and the rest is history. Heck, most warships today are glass-cannons dependent on knocking out the enemy with a first strike.

It’s plausible, simply put. But Hood was just to damn old and outdated to fight Bismarck or anything newer.
